When I woke up yesterday morning, it was close to +30c outside and the Maldivian sea was gently rocking the boat. In the evening, our car monitor showed the outside temperature being -28c. My winter clothes, my hat, my gloves and boots are deep down in the storage. Today was the first day in a month when my out-of-office replies were not on any longer. Summer holidays truly are over now. Behind is one of the best months I’ve had in a long, long time.
During the past month, I’ve seen hundreds of monks lining up for lunch. Seen more sunrises than during my entire life before. I’ve visited tens of beautiful temples, seen countless paradise-like beaches. I’ve seen unbelievable riches, as well as some devastating poverty. I’ve enjoyed the sun rays on my face. I’ve seen hundreds of warm and kind smiles, witnessed and experienced true happiness and joy. I’ve spent time with my close ones, and had some much needed time with my own thoughts. I’ve stared in awe as the mantas were doing a beautiful dance in front of my eyes, shocked as a shark swam so close by me that I was hit on the dead by its fin. I’ve been taken by the drift, swam alongside a turtle and seen a school of dolphins swim around us. During this month I’ve been happy. I’ve been able to do what I enjoy doing the most – I’ve explored new countries, encountered new situations and I’ve learned to understand the world a bit more.
Behind are 31 days on the road, in 10 different cities, 9 flights and 5 different countries. Behind are some breathtaking moments, amazing experiences and positive surprises. Myanmar was a huge positive surprise, Sri Lanka did not make me convinced I’d return, the Maldivian waters and the beautiful islands took my breath away several times. I also got to return to Bangkok, go back to the old “hometown” and celebrate new year in Kuala Lumpur with my family.
The memories of this trip will follow with me for a long, long time. I’ve also got some 5000 photos and 4 hours of video material making sure the precious moments will not be forgotten. I can also promise that you’ll hear more about this trip in the upcoming weeks, there are several stories waiting to be told. Even though at this moment I’m feeling extremely tired, beneath that, I’m also feeling extremely grateful. I’m blessed to have a life where this kind of experiences are possible. Even if the daily life is not the greatest one always, this kind of experiences make it easy to make it through the tough days.
